The Bengaluru-headquartered startup Latlong has recently introduced a geo-coding API, which, according to their blog post, boasts a notably higher level of precision than the Google Maps API.

According to the research, Latlong’s API exhibits a significantly higher level of precision, measuring 35 times more accurately than Microsoft Bing API and approximately 200 times more accurately than TomTom API. These APIs are also extremely helpful in creating Data Science projects using Python libraries.

According to Puranika Narayana Bhatta, the CEO of Latlong, “An extensive benchmarking activity was conducted by analyzing numerous addresses to encompass diverse possibilities across the nation, including residential and commercial establishments, hospitals and schools, urban and rural areas, Tier 1 and Tier 4 cities, as well as apartments and independent houses.”

Latlong is utilizing the AI4 Bharat API to accomplish its objectives. IIT Madras’ AI4 Bharat initiative aims to provide open-source datasets and AI models for Indic languages.

Bhatta also said, “Latlong excels in its collection of curated area data, consisting of polygons mapped across India. This feature allows for the swift elimination of unsuitable locations that do not align with the specified ‘area.’ Furthermore, Latlong utilizes Indian language scripts effectively to facilitate string matches. To illustrate, including IIT Madras’s AI4 Bharat API enables seamless mapping of variations such as Jainagar, Jayanagara, and Jayanagar to the same location.”

Another Indian startup, MapMyIndia, competes with Google in this sector by providing a complete API stack, IOT devices, and a map app, among other services. MapMyIndia targets four primary vertical markets:

  • End-users
  • Automobile sector
  • Mobile internet
  • Businesses and government entities

Conclusion

Digital maps have transformed how we interact and understand our world. Through advanced technologies like satellite imagery, GIS data, and real-time updates, digital maps offer unparalleled accuracy, detail, and functionality. This study by IIT Kanpur on Latlong proves that India always surprises the world with advanced technologies with the help of its brilliant minds.
