Working in the Metaverse

Web Development
What if we tell you that you can live a life where you have a chat with your coworker on the top of a mountain, take notes while exploring a space station, or move your office from Mumbai to Paris in a second, all without compromising the comfort of your house.
Working in the Metaverse

You can also use your AI-enabled doppelganger for all the challenging tasks. These examples are just a glimpse of what author Neal Stephenson predicted in 1992 by coining the term “Metaverse.” The author described this term as the future of virtual reality.

Metaverse is a network of 3D virtual worlds where folks can do business, interact, and make virtual connections through their virtual “avatars.” We can also define it as a virtual reality version of today’s internet.

The Metaverse is still a work in progress. However, several tech goliaths, such as Meta, Roblox, Epic Games, etc., have already incorporated this technology into their networks by constructing their virtual world or Metaverse. It is the creation of several diverse technologies, including virtual reality platforms, ML, blockchain, gaming, 3D graphics, currencies, and sometimes VR headgears.

Entering the Metaverse

Generally, getting yourself into the metaverse is relatively easy. All you need is a PC, a keyboard and a mouse. However, for a whole 3D surround experience, it is recommended that you get a VR headset. On the other hand, with the advancements in computer-generated holograms, the demand for headgears can be eliminated soon. In addition, organizations such as Meta (formerly Facebook) are working on cutting-edge gloves where users can feel the virtual world's movement, textures, and pressure.

Once in the virtual world, you can live an alternate life where you can expand your online social circle, rear virtual pets, attend events, buy simulated properties, design and trade digital art, and make virtual money.

Working in the Metaverse

The effects of COVID-19, primarily the restrictions on traveling and face-to-face meetings, put the spotlight on the virtual world and how it can be used to improve work from home. As a result, several organizations are working relentlessly to provide an original, united, and interactive remote work experience. As a result, the Metaverse is ready to revolutionize the virtual workplace in four primary forms:

  • Intriguing layouts of team collaboration
  • AI-enabled associates
  • The advancement of a metaverse economy with completely new corporations and job roles
  • Acceleration of learning and skills acquisition through virtualization and gamified technologies

The metaverse is set to bring new levels of social connections, mobility, and collaboration to a world of virtual networks. From customizable avatars to an office-like experience, the virtual world offers several features to make remote work fun and interactive. For example, an employee's digital avatar can pop in and out of virtual meeting rooms and offices in real-time. Another exciting feature is the ability to bump into colleagues in the virtual world just like you would in a real office, making the remote work experience pleasurable.

The break room in offices is another important aspect while working as employees usually hang out and chat in these rooms during their free time. Your break room could look like anything from a dense forest to an aquarium in the virtual world. It all depends on your mood.

Conclusion

The workplace of the 2020s already looks extensively different from what we could have imagined just a couple of years ago: the rise of remote and hybrid working has changed expectations around why, where, and how people work. As a result, the metaverse is considered the next chapter in the remote and hybrid working environment. Although the virtual world is still a work in progress, it allows companies to reset the balance in hybrid and remote work and recapture the spontaneity, interactivity, and fun of team-based working and learning while maintaining flexibility, productivity, and convenience of working from home.
