Regions and Availability Zones

AWS Regions and AZ Architecture

Explanation
AWS Global Infrastructure is designed to deliver high availability, fault tolerance, and low latency through a globally distributed network of regions and availability zones. An AWS Region is a physical geographic area that contains multiple, isolated Availability Zones (AZs). Each AZ is a fully independent data center with its own power, cooling, and networking, connected to other AZs in the same region via high-throughput, low-latency links. By deploying resources across multiple AZs, applications can continue operating even if one data center fails. AWS continuously expands regions to meet data residency, compliance, and performance requirements.

Example
A production web application is deployed across two availability zones within the same AWS region. Application servers run in both zones behind a load balancer. If one AZ experiences a power or network issue, traffic is automatically routed to the healthy zone. Users experience no downtime. Backups are maintained within the region to meet data residency requirements. This design ensures resilience without complex manual intervention.

Use Cases
• High-availability production systems
• Disaster-resilient application design
• Compliance-driven deployments
• Low-latency regional services
